In tense situations, Denmark and Finland were brought to a standstill
After Christian Eriksen dropped to the ground during Denmark's European Championship play against Finland, medics raced to his aid. Inside the stadium in Copenhagen, there were heartbreaking scenes as the Danish players stood by the side of their attacking midfielder
Eriksen, who left Tottenham in January 2020, appeared to slump to the ground as he attempted to get away from the ball
Doctors and the referee were summoned to the site to aid him after the players brought his condition to their attention
Kasper Schmeichel and Andreas Christensen were among those who came to Eriksen's aid, and it was evident that the situation was dire
Shortly after, Eriksen was then placed into the recovery position
In an attempt to resuscitate the 29-year-old, doctors began doing CPR.
While remaining by Eriksen's side, the Denmark players turned away in terror
Danish spectators were seen in understandable sorrow when the TV cameras panned away from the event
Sabrina Eriksen, Eriksen's wife, then approached the touchline and was consoled by Simon Kjaer and Schmeichel
Before returning to meet with Finland manager Markku Kanerva, Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand stepped across the field to where Eriksen was being treated
The players then exited the field, as referee Anthony Taylor escorted the officials off
Gary Lineker, Cesc Fabregas, Alex Scott, and Micah Richards all offered Eriksen their best wishes, leaving the BBC studio stunned
Fabregas said: “I don’t even know what to say really
“My body is shaking. All I can think about is Christian’s family and what they must be going through.
“It’s a very very sad moment and I pray for the very best."
An emotional Scott added that she'd sent a text to her mother to tell her she loved her.
“I can’t believe what we’re witnessing. I think football totally goes out of the window right now," she said.
